Prevent acute underweight in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD with a high-calorie diet.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), popularly dubbed “smoker's cough”, is a serious and progressive chronic lung disease that was mostly triggered by high, long-term cigarette consumption. In the advanced stage, those affected are usually exposed to massive weight loss. This secondary symptom is also called “COPD wasting” in the medical community. "Because of the chronic narrowing of the airways, COPD patients need about ten times more calories to breathe than healthy patients," explained Prof. Dr. Dieter Köhler from the scientific advisory board of the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP). To counteract an underweight, a conscious and sensible diet is necessary.

Eating is also becoming increasingly difficult for COPD patients
The progressive shortness of breath in COPD makes it difficult for patients to perform any type of activity. Even eating is becoming a very arduous task. Therefore, those affected should cover their high daily calorie needs with particularly high-calorie but healthy foods. "Wanting to eat more in volume is hardly feasible if food intake causes problems due to increasing shortness of breath," explains the lung expert. Instead, a nutritional plan that is high in calories should be drawn up. Dr. also advises Dieter Köhler: "Instead, COPD patients can enrich their eating plan with high-calorie drinks such as pure fruit juices or milk-based drinks as well as with small snacks such as an avocado, a cream pudding or nuts."

However, this does not mean that a healthy and balanced diet should be disregarded. The nutrition plan should primarily include dishes that contain many vitamins, minerals and fiber. Advice centers can be of assistance in drawing up the nutrition plan. For this purpose, the family doctor should be asked where the next counseling center is located. (sb, Nov 15, 2010)
