AOK Plus introduces electronic health card

The introduction of the electronic health card (eGK) is progressing. In the coming months, the eGK should gradually replace the previous health insurance cards according to the plans of the legislator. At the beginning of the year, the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV) and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds had agreed on a procedure for introducing the eGK.

AOK PLUS starts the introduction of the electronic health card The new electronic health card should offer significantly better protection against misuse and, for example, also enable the storage of emergency data, so the reasoning for the introduction of the eGK. Among other things, the new card will contain a photo of the insured, for which AOK PLUS is currently requesting the insured to submit appropriate passport photos. As of today, AOK PLUS in Saxony and Thuringia has sent the first letters to its insured, calling on “all those who are addressed” to “send a passport photo either by post or online. Only then can the new chip card, which is far more secure than the old one, be successfully introduced, ”said Rolf Steinbronn, CEO of AOK PLUS. Health insurance hopes to be able to provide all insured with the new health card by spring 2013 at the latest. Until the new electronic health cards are handed over to the insured, the old health insurance cards will remain valid, according to the AOK PLUS. So that all insured persons submit a picture in time that meets today's requirements for a passport photo, all AOK members are requested to submit such a passport photo in appropriate letters, explained Steinbronn.

Improving treatment and optimizing cost control The insurance companies and doctors hope that the eGK will provide them with the opportunity in the future to exchange findings and information about their patients with one another via the online card terminals. It remains to be seen whether this will actually benefit patients. Theoretically, although there is a possibility of improving medical care, critics fear that the focus will be more on uncovering cases of card misuse than on optimizing treatment, so that the statutory health insurance companies have yet to prove that this is the case new system will improve medical services for their insured and the eGK will not only be used to be able to control invoices even better in the future.
